Accurate clinker storage monitoring with LiDAR ensures precise CO₂ tax calculations and improves inventory management.
A global leader in the building materials industry sought an innovative approach to monitor and manage the storage volume of clinker, a key raw material in cement production. Faced with stringent CO₂ tax requirements, the company needed a highly accurate solution to quantify its clinker stockpile volume, thus enabling precise tax calculations based on actual production.
The company faced significant challenges in measuring the volume of clinker stored in its large clinker hall, which led to inaccurate estimates for CO₂ tax calculations. Without a reliable, direct measurement method, the customer relied on indirect estimation techniques that often required manual adjustments to inventory data and tax figures. This process was time-consuming and carried risks of both overpayment and potential non-compliance with CO₂ tax regulations. As the tax is directly tied to clinker production volume, the customer needed a precise solution to ensure tax payments accurately reflected actual production.
Blickfeld’s LiDAR technology delivered the accuracy and tracking capability needed to overcome these issues. The solution involved installing 12 Blickfeld LiDAR sensors throughout the clinker hall, generating a unified, high-density point cloud for continuous volume measurement. Integrated with the company’s ERP system, the sensors provided current clinker volume and mass data, available at any time. The sensors’ onboard data processing delivered accurate, ready-to-use inventory readings, significantly reducing the need for regular manual volume checks.
Since the system’s implementation, the customer has had direct access to precise clinker volume and mass data within their ERP system. This access has reduced the need for manual adjustments by over 80%, minimizing labor costs, improving inventory accuracy, and enabling exact CO₂ tax calculation. With reliable volume data, the company has filled a significant gap in its digital production and supply chain processes, achieving more efficient tax reporting and operational workflows.
Building on the success of the clinker hall integration, the company is expanding Blickfeld’s LiDAR solution to other facilities with similar bulk material monitoring needs. Recently, a two-sensor setup was implemented in a smaller storage bunker, supporting the company’s goal to enhance inventory accuracy and operational efficiency across its locations.
